4 Most Common Mistakes When Choosing a Healthcare Provider

4 Most Common Mistakes When choosing a Healthcare Professional

One of the most common complaints I get from clients is that they have seen professionals in the past and haven’t gotten results! My first question is 'Did you do your research on your coach before hand?' And I almost certainly am always met with the same blank stare. I can almost hear them thinking 'Research for the best coach... WHY!? I searched GOOGLE and chose the top one!' And I get it you are busy... and who has the time?

But you should do your research, and make sure they are the right fit! After all, your health is very easily the most precious and best investment you will ever make, and every Tom, Jill and Janet is a coach now since the Pandemic.

So before ending up with a lemon, start by navigating the 4 Most common pitfalls, when choosing your next health professional.

#1 They get into an assembly line

You are an individual, and your body's genetics, biochemistry and structure are as unique as your fingerprint... You're one of a kind! Don’t get me wrong, we all have the same muscles and bones, but just because you have knee pain, doesn’t mean the source is the same as Bobs from down the street.

For example, I have had clients' gut issues resolve by removing gluten and adding digestive enzymes... Whereas others it was working the vagus nerve, and seeing an osteopath! Moral of the story: just because you have the same symptoms, doesn't mean it is the same cause.

Solution:

Ok, that makes sense... So what do I do from here? Research, and find a healthcare professional that cares, and is interested in finding the root cause of your symptoms, and not just treating the symptoms themselves! What does this mean? You should receive a very in-depth health history, questionnaires and objective testing of some sort to be sure of what we are doing. And this is pretty much impossible to do in 30-mins, let alone 15!

Our first appointment is 90mins, (and people fill in questionnaires and a food journal at home beforehand.) Our evaluation includes a multitude of objective tests, and evaluations to pinpoint exactly what suggestions to make.

#2 People sacrifice their health for, a good deal!

It sounds stupid writing it down, but you know it happens often! Probably only to people you know and not yourself right... LOL. Most of the time, myself included, people, shop for deals and always go for what is cheapest. But as the old saying goes, when you pay peanuts... you usually get monkeys!

The reality is good therapists should respect themselves, and charge the appropriate price. I don’t mean you should overpay, but you shouldn’t hire someone to take care of your health based on the fact they are the cheapest around. If they are the cheapest, there is a reason, and usually, it will take you 4X as long and 2X the money to get the same results you would have with the expert!

Solution :

Go for the expert, and be willing to invest. I learned this lesson the hard way, paying $1000's in supplements over the years, until finally meeting one of my mentors. She met me once and gave me 2 supplements and 1 exercise and in 30-days all of my digestive problems were gone!

#3 They go to one person…. for everything!!

Often I hear things like ‘I jammed my neck a couple of weeks ago; it’s not any better yet… Do you think I should go to the doctor and get anti-inflammatories?’ NO! I think you should go to a qualified therapist, who will get to the root cause of your pain/structural problem.

What I am trying to say is, that every professional has their role, and doctors have an integral one. You should not come to see me to perform open heart surgery, just as you wouldn’t go see a chiropractor to balance your hormones.

Solution:

Go for a healthcare professional that has a proven track record in fixing the complaint you have and has a holistic approach. Try and get referrals or testimonials from people you know who have been to see them previously!

#4 They expect their health care professional to do everything

There are many extremely qualified Medical Doctors and talented therapists out there, who can heal/fix a multitude of issues. However, the client is rarely completely passive in this experience, and if you are completely passive, you should probably question the efficacy, long-term, of the treatment!

The hard truth is people need to be active participators in their health and for long-lasting results, should be incorporating the lifestyle strategies provided from their practitioner.

Solution:

Ask if you will have homework, or lifestyle strategies to implement, and not just a grocery list of supplements! Slight changes to your lifestyle can pay huge dividends in quality of life, and completing assigned tasks will only make things go faster and save you time and money.
